Slow flash  (the technique used for the photographing a person in front of
the setting/rising sun).

The *ist D manual describes this technique using the RTF flash (AFAIR): Use
Tv and TURN ON the RTF flash AFTER adjstments for correct expose has been
made by you or the camera.

In the real world it's a little impractial to have to turn the flash on/off
for this technique.

It's easier to just adjust the speed with the shutter speed wheel (index
finger) until the bar-graph in the viewfinder indicates corret exposure.
Then take the picture. The chosen aperture will influence how much light the
flash will give. The shutter speed setting will ensure correct esposure of
the background.
