You'd need a really big print, superb lenses and very careful technique to tell the difference between 2 and 10 gigapixels....

Sorry :)

Ooookay. I can't personally dispute that, however...

I distinctly recall a web site where I saw a set of comparison images of, I think it was, an apple ~ one image recorded at 2 MP and the other at 5 MP. Both the prints and the apple in the print were the same size. The apple in each was the same apple.
As I recall, the image size was about 4X6". It might have been as small as 3X3". Too long ago for the memory to be an accurate recall.
The venue it appeared on might have been DPReview, or similar, from about 2 or 3 years ago.
There was a distinct and dramatic dfference in the "richness" or memory content of the 5 MP image, over the 2 MP one.
No question in anybody's mind which had more information.
If I may assume the presenter didn't manipulate either image, the 5 MP image was a clear winner.

I started with a 1.3 MP Epson digital, progressed thru a 4 MP Pentax (Optio 4S) and now have an Olympus Camedia C-5050 (5 MP.)
Quite frankly, when I uploaded the camera's images to my CPU and displayed them on my .26 dot pitch 17" monitor, to the full size able to be displayed, I was very happy with the 1.3 MB Epson's images! And now, I think the 4S's images are as good as the C-5050.
Now, I didn't blow any of them up and have them printed on a high quality printer, but I did expand each image to the full monitor screen.

So, what I'm saying is, I did see evidence of any *notable* image quality difference between 2 and 5 MP images, on that web site.

Yet, from a practical standpoint, on my monitor, even a 1.3 MP image was pretty darned good!
As I was the photographer, I perhaps wasn't as critical as I might have been, had I been asked to find any differences betweeen all my jpegs.
So, I have a dichotomy, don't I? When the only differences I've clearly seen is on that one web site with the apple images.

It was that comparison, and that alone, that prompted my comment in dispute of his contention.

In the end, I'll keep your pronouncement in mind... Thanks. You've disturbed my conviction!
