That's interesting, Peter. The M 85/2 that I used to own was bought as a used lens, although it was truly in mint condition. But, unlike what you describe, it did focus fairly easily - I do not remember any stiffness. On the other hand: 1. It was not new, and may have been focused quite a large number of times by someone who took very good care of it. 2. My memory may be faulty. (However, if had been ~quite~ stiff, I really think I'd've remembered that.) I certainly do agree that most well-used lenses do get ~somewhat~ easier to turn the focus ring on over time. (I'm tempted to say that this is true about only the best lenses, but I guess those are just the ones that get focused the most often - <g>.) Fred
