If I remember correctly, f/4.8 on a digicam like Optio has same depth of field like, my guess, f/16 on a film SLR. So you won't have problems with DOF, it seems. Most digicams are limited to f/8 or larger, and even at f/5.6-8 probably difraction limits the resolution more than the sensor.

I believe the shutter is also the aperture, so it's not very flexible.
