As far as I know, USB 2 devices should be useable with USB 1, but will just run at USB 1 speed rather than whizzy USB 2. I've used my DS with the USB 1 ports on my machine without realising...I only foudn out when I tried it on my work machine and found out how much faster it was with USB 2.
