I'm still fumbling about with freeciv. as far as I know, recent versions don't have the civ3 ruleset, which I have come to enjoy--the culture rules in particular, as well as the trade and negotiation system. my next desktop will be a Linux/windows (in that order of preference) dual-boot. Linux to do actual stuff, and windows for the odd game--any in the Total War series (Rome, Midieval, Shogun...), and the occasional scifi spacesim like freelancer or mechwarrior.
