There are several series of lenses Pentax made for the K-mount cameras. This list covers most of the Pentax lenses made since 1975 or so.
The original K-mount lenses are labeled "SMC Pentax" (no letter designation on the lens) but are usually listed here on PDML as "K" series lenses.
The "M" series lenses that came out with the MX and ME and were made for about a decade are smaller than the "K" lenses. Usually labeled "SMC Pentax-M"
The "A" series lenses came out with the Super Program, etc. They have an auto apperture (A) possition and work with all the cameras since. Labeled "SMC Pentax-A".
The "F" Series are the first autofocus lenses. They are basically "A" lenses with autofocus and powerzoom.
The "FA" series are the next to the last series, some are apparently still being made. Similar to the F but do not have powerzoom and some folks feel they are mechanically not up to the older lenses.
The "DA" (Digital only) and "D-FA" are the current series of lenses. The DA is digital only.
This list covers most of the Pentax lenses made since 1975 or so.

I see that some people refer to M or A type lenses. I assumed that that meant they were auto or manual but seemingly not.
