But its no longer RAW, i.e. it HAS been manipulated, in the sense that the RAW matrix has been converted irreversibly into pixels that reflect the values of adjacent RAW pixel values.

How? Is there a simple way to do this?

A quick search showed a post to this list by John Francis, saying that
the Pentax RAW format has a TIFF structure. Photoshop doens't want to
open a PEF file as TIFF, saying it has an unsupported bith depth (I
suppose that's the 2 byte per pixel thing)

How did you do it? It would be interesting to play with one of these

files.
