Actually, from the results I get with the 85/1.9
(Under $150.00) I don't know if the 77 could beat it
for portraits, it WOULD be much easier to use and
a lot smaller.

isn't just a bit sharp edged/harsh for portrait work.
This could be a bit of a "sour grapes" thing but I
really do love the way the 85 renders skin and OOF
backgrounds.
The word "creamy" comes to mind.
