Several years ago in a technical emergency interstate I had to board a plane 
with an un-packaged CRT oscilloscope (quite a heavy and bulky piece of 
equipment) as hand luggage, the airport security asked me to plug it in so as 
to show that it worked, I did, a small 5mm green LED lit and they were 
happy :-)

I have never had problems with my photographic gear as I usually have it 
checked and the serial numbers registered with customs.
