It's the same focal length but different coverage!
35mm would be close to the "normal" focal length.

I'd take something with he perspective of a 50, i.e., a 50 or a 35 for the *ist D. OTOH, I always like something a little on the Tele side, so I'd take a 50. On the third hand, however, there are many zooms that would do the job quality wise.
