If you can wind the film "once" and then the whole camera jammed, it is the mirror cocking arm which is worn or distorted. That means the shutter is cocked, but the mirror assembly isn't. This is a common issue with MX and could be fixed by bending it back slightly. However, many technicans took the shortcut to un-jam it only. Pentax Australia did that to me twice and tried to blame me for the jamming (back then I did not know the MX that well).

I now have an MX with a broken shutter. It will not cock, or it is
cocked but the release won't activate it (am I right that it needs no
batteries?) nor will the self-timer.
