I believe that little orange barred gizmo whirls around as you advance the film to let 
you know your film is actually moving onto the take up spool....kind of a built in 
insurance policy against mis-loaded film.

I'm glad you like the ME Super, it is a great little. Like you, I've owned my share of 
Pentax cameras including both the MG and ME Super.  I loved my ME Super as well but 
unfortunately the shutter died on me and the repair cost was almost as much as I could 
pick up a "new" one off of eBay.......

Damn, now I'm feeling enabled..........
