Compositionally the first one is a 1000 times better, but it is not soft focus, it is so soft it is out of focus all over. Either the subject or the background needs to be sharper. Which depends on what you want the picture to mean. Just a change of focus would make two entirely different pictures from this same photo.

The second one's a nice snap of your lovely wife and cute kid.

You know, Boris, these two shots really make my point about this whole issue. Both photos would make great teaching aides about what not to do, but saying that does not make you feel good, I think. They were interesting experiments for you, and worth taking for that reason. But I think you are well aware of their deficiencies. They almost look like you posted them to confirm my previous post about critiques.

For what it is worth, the lesson you should learn from these is that things like soft focus, and tilted cameras need to be used delicately and deliberately. Over doing them can be disastrous.

Hi!

As we say in Russian - and here is the piano, just hiding in the
bushes...

I took just two shots. The first one and the second one (this one).
One at f/4.5 portrait oriented, another at f/11 landscape oriented.

Heh. Now that I posted two of them - which is better?

Pity, I cannot write in small letters in e-mail... But I think the two
couldn't be really compared.

I am all ears now <g>...
