We were on our way back towards Moab from Dead Horse, when I
decided to take a scenic drive into the canyon. We turned right,
just past the oil tanks, or perhaps just before, anyway, I was
sure it was the top of the Schaefer Basin trail, and would lead
us back to the potash mine. Anyway, I was wrong about that. The
road was fine, though rough and I figured all was well. We
rounded a hairpin turn on a vwery steep grade (down) and the
road went to hell, literally. I got out of the car and walked a
bit of it, and decided that maybe we could get through the sandy
soft part. I also figured there was no way I was going to back
us out of trouble, as the road at that point was only slightly
wider than the car, with cliff face on one side and a whole lot
of nothing on the other.
We made it through the soft stuff, though it was only
because gravity was leading me in the direction I wanted to go,
and then had to drive under a HUGE rock that had falled across
the road. Having a rather low clearance vehicle, though one with
all wheel drive, I decided to do a bit of road reconstruction
under the rock, where rain had made some pretty deap channels. I
misjudged the width of the cars track, we fell off the line of
rocks I had laid down, and put a dent in the oil pan deep enough
to put my fist into. It amazed my the engine kept running, but
the dent was right between the #3 and 4 cylinders, and the
connecting rods didn't impact the punched in pan. I never did
get it repaired, choosing instead to leave it as a badge of
honour for the vehicle. The dent in the pan, I discovered at the
next oil change displaced almost a half liter of oil.
Anyway, it was after that incident that my wife agreed to
the bigger truck.
