The difficulty is that either it looks sharp in the viewfinder or it
doesn't.  If it does look sharp, then MFing can't help much as you have
no way of judging what better focus would be.  I think the problem is
that modern AF cameras have lousy focusing screens with no split prisms,
etc., so that it's difficult to MF very well.
