Shutter speed lag is a pain on digital point-n-shoot cameras, but...

You can get around it with pre-focusing.  I've used the Sony S75, a 3.2 
Mpixel camera, at girl's gymnastics meets.  If you pre-focus on the horse, you can 
catch the girls vaulting on it.  The shutter lag is imperceptible.
