Mounting a heavy camera on a binocular tube is not a good idea. But the *ist D is very light and it may be practical. With a magnification of a few hundred the tiniest vibration will blur the images. The shutter and mirror of the *ist D make it far less suitable than a host of other digitals available -- and in daily use -- by microscopists.
