You are talking about the rangefinder-Nikon era. Leica M3 corrected that in 1954 but 
in 1959 Nikon F turned the tables again. At that time Pentax was an established pro 
SLR and if they had switched to bayonet earlier it may or may not have made the 
difference - but this was 6 years before Spotmatic.
Pentax never made rangefinder cameras so Pentax was in a different picture.
