What you guys may possibly overlooking is that
there may be nothing wrong with the designs,
the problem may lie in manufacturing/quality
control.

If so, the third generation design may not be
any better than the first with regards to
focus accuracy.

Very interesting.
Especially since the 10D is not a first generation camera.
If you count from D30, it's third generation. However, the chip and
possibly much of the tech is different. It probably more relevant
to compare it with the D60, to which the 10D is simply an upgrade.
IIRC, autofocus was one of the problem areas with the D60 as well.
