I've got the previous model, the Elite II, which has the same Dmax spec.  I think the 
A/D converter limit is 4.8, while the real limit is about 4.2, which is enough to look 
through the darkest part of most slides.  It even works for Velvia, especially when 
using multiple scanning for suppressing noise.

The software does, however, have some limitations when scanning black and white 
negatives, in which case Vuescan is recommended.

By the way, it is recommended that the scans are made with 16bit sampling, which with 
the Elite II give 60MB files....
