pentax smc 500mm f4.5 or tamron 400mm f4?? suggestions

i would like both but the wife has limited me to one.
i noticed that there is a 500mm on ebay at the moment.
what would be  a good price? Is 100mm a lot of difference? noticeable?
anyone used one or both of these lenses?
