BAD PHOTO ALERT!... But here's an example of the type of panning I think we're talking about of a recent ice race (how Canadian! <g>).
This is a piece of crap, but at least it illustrates what we're talking about (I think). Taken at either 1/30th or maybe even 1/15th (!), wide open at f3.8 with my Vivitar 19mm (I was standing about 2 or 3 feet from the bike when I snapped!): http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=1215055&size=lg But, as you can see, relatively sharp (at least compared to the rest of the pic) head, blurry wheels. It was getting dark (around 3:30 late December), it was overcast, so all of the prints from that roll are crap, and I ~still~ don't have the rolls I took from earlier in the day when it was bright and sunny (still gotta get to Aaron's and get those chems to do my own b&w). Ice races are pretty cool and fun to watch though. Heavily studded tires (with 1/2 inch long wood screws actually) give a bit of traction, but it's dangerous as hell if one of them tars (as the NASCAR boys call "tires") gets ya - one of the racers had his leg ripped open for 21 stitches. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=1215032&size=lg But I'm really getting OT now... regards, frank frank theriault spewed the following crap: > <snip>I've sort of (accidentally) gotten the effect in some bike race photos, > but > damned if I can find them now. I've never really done it in auto racing > photos, but I haven't taken any of those for almost 30 years (!). > > regards, > frank > -- "Honour - that virtue of the unjust!" -Albert Camus
