Because Canon sell loads of lenses without aperture rings....

They want the non-serious photographers to buy into digital SLR's. This is the ony way 
for prices to come down to a level so that serious ones will buy them. And nothing 
prevent the serious shooters to pair the *ist with a non FA J lens.
