As an addendum to our earlier discussion, I was fascinated when I saw some of the
equipment (lighting) that this man used
to take this lifelong series of (mostly) train photographs.
I remember a picture of one of the reflectors, about a meter in diameter, with sockets
for, and loaded with about 15 mogul
based large fist sized flashbulbs arranged in concentric circles from inside the outer
rim to a cluster of 3 in the
center. And he used many multiples of this rig for his later photos. Costly in time
and materials, but look at the
results! Enough to put most of us to shame for our piddling efforts (be honest!).
Until later, when railroads and calendar makers were clamoring for his images, he had
one chance a night to catch a
particular run. Later, he could get the railroad to run trains out to his site and
chug them back and forth until he was
satisfied.
Quite the specialist.
