Kevin, for connecting an off-camera flash unit to your camera you need a FP5 (5 pins) cable, either long or short, and two hot shoe adapters (one if your unit is the AF500FTZ). There are two adapter you can use, the F and the Fg but the F is the only one having a second hot shoe on top. You could attach your second unit there. There has been much discussion on this topic a few months ago but I didn't follow it too closely, maybe somebody else can give you some pointers since I don't know if we have archives back right now.
