Lori DiFurio from Adobe recently commented on this list about Adobe Document Server with Reader Extensions as a means of enabling save functionality on a PDF by PDF basis, where the PDFs are consumed by Acrobat Reader. In reading the literature on the product, it would seem an alternative to client/server and scripting approches to accomplishing the same goal. Here are a few observations/questions I have regarding Document Server that other listmember might find interesting, if Adobe and/or other listmembers can comment: 1) What are the available business models for licensing the Server product and extending the functionality of PDFs to be consumed in Reader. No pricing information, or even discussion of business models (per PDF, per organization, per proc/cpu) information appears on the Adobe website, and the feedback I get from clients is that its difficult to impossible to find someone at Adobe who knows the product and can comment on how to buy it - this is not my experience, as I haven't contacted Adobe, but this is my client's perception if not reality. 2) Is the product licensed in such a manner to facilitate an organization adding rights to PDFs to be circulated outside the organization owning the Document Server? In reviewing the licensing agreement embedded in the Evaluation version of the product available for download from Adobe, Extranet-types of implementation and distribution of rights-enhanced PDFs appears to be expressly prohibited - like three different ways. If this is the case, is it proper to assume this is an Intranet-only solution, and if so, how does Adobe plan to address the need for standalone saving of Data and PDFs (i.e. no client/server roundtrips). 3) Adobe has minimized the visibility of Approval in recent months, and has been quiet on the plans for the product - it does not appear to play a key role in the recently repositioned Adobe world. If this is the case, as folks are assuming the product is being prepared for discontinuation, how might an organization gain the technical benefits that Approval offered, with or without Document Server. Thanks in advance for the discussion/answers, particularly if offered by Adobe.
