A very interesting question.
If I wanted an emergency boot disk, I wouldn't waste an 80 GB hard
drive. I'm not sure this is actually possible without jumping through a
lot of hoops.

There are many boot CDs available, and I think I'd recommend the Bart
PE, which boots into an XP-like environment.

I have used this disk, and it works very well.
You may want to look at booting from a USB flash drive, which appears to
be somewhat easier:

Remember, you're probably going to boot into a DOS environment, whcih
will require some knowledge of DOS.
If your purpose is to be able to access an HD that's not booting for
some reason (And may not be readable), Bart PE is the way to go.
Your 80GB drive will make an excellent backup drive.
