My sister (The legal secretary) submitted this question to the firm's style guru (A published author on the subject) and he sent her this:
"The style manual of the Modern Language Association now endorses the use of one space following a period. Personally, I think the firm should move to this position, for it would reduce a lot of time devoted to proof-reading in search of the two spaces in the middle of a sentence: We could simply global replace two for one."
