I don't have the solution but I did experience a similar problem yesterday in installing the last update (Symantec Common Client Updates) identified by Live Update. It appeared to be in a loop although the task manager said "running" (as opposed to "not responding"). I had to "end task" the process twice. No harm appears to have been done.
Perhaps there's a problem with this particular update that Symantec needs to address.
