I don't have the solution but I did experience a similar problem yesterday
in installing the last update (Symantec Common Client Updates) identified by
Live Update. It appeared to be in a loop although the task manager said
"running" (as opposed to "not responding"). I had to "end task" the process
twice. No harm appears to have been done.

Perhaps there's a problem with this particular update that Symantec needs to
address.

Subject: PCWorks: norton shuts down XP

Customer came in with this problem PC boots up all the way then says there
has been a problem with Symantec (Norton) and it will fix the problem and
reboot..same thing over and over, I could not uninstall Norton so I
installed
Norton System ( with system restore turned off) works 2003, it found 60
problems in the registry and fixed them I then registered the new version
and
downloaded the updates and scanned for viruses it went to the end but did
not
complete normally, now I am back to where I started- comes up and then shuts
down...its not the MS blast ..I have also tried uninstalling and
reinstalling
system works=no help.....any help greatly appreciated
