You could try for a dirty install of IE6/SP1 over what's there http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp
I use XP and believe the option to repair might still be in settings/control panel/add/remove programs and it probably would reach out to Microsoft if necessary to correct its problems.
