Sorry is this seems simple but is it possible to password an individual folder
on a windows 98 system.

I have a number of different users in a laboratory using a single machine.
One of these now wants his material and data passworded to that it cannot
be accessed by other students in the lab.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Windows won't allow password-protecting individual files or folders. You need to use a 3rd-party product of some sort. A simple method is to use Winzip to create a password protected archive. File -- New Archive then Options -- Password

You can search Ziff-net or CNET for other password protecting programs.
