Computer Geeks were selling a USB connected case for notebook size hard
drives. Since my old notebook does work anymore (the hard drive is fine,
since I have tried it in other notebooks), I thought the USB Hard Drive case
would be a perfect use for the un-used drive.

I received the unit yesterday and tried to get it working today. The notebook
hard drive (an IBM) was installed in the case with little problem. The USB
device was detected by Windows 98 SE and the drivers installed off a floppy.
The drive was powered and turning (I could hear/feel it). However, no matter
what I tried, I could not get Windows to give me a drive icon for it.

The hard drive came out of the notebook without a jumper. I found a jumper
and tried all four possible combinations of jumper settings. With the jumper
set to "select" (and one or two of the other settings), the drive would spin
up and the green access light on the usb unit would come on and then go off
(after a timeout or whatever), but still no drive listed in "My Computer".

Any suggestions? One wrinkle is that it (the drive) was formatted under
Windows 2000. Could that be a problem with Windows 98? I will try fdisking
and reformatting the drive as soon as I can locate a working notebook.....

I would love to get this thing working. It was only $29, so with a 15%
restocking fee and paying shipping both ways, I would only end up recovering
$10 if I send it back.....
