It's not just spaces, it is all characters.

You need to set Pan to use a monospaced or non-proportional font where 
every character has the same width, sometimes called a typewriter font. 
You have it set to using a proportional font where some characters are 
narrower than others. E.g. "m" is about six times as wide as "i".

Go to the Edit menu, Edit Preferences, and click on the Font tab.

Try using Consolas, Courier New or Cascadia, or check what font Alpine 
is using and use that.
