Derp.  Your explanation was exactly right. So much for my 99% certainty.  I
must have accidentally reset it to save text somehow for the first time
ever at exactly the same time those updates were installed and never even
thought to check that option.  In any case, all good now and thanks so much
for taking the time to help!
