Indeed. There is consistency, and inconsistency, aplenty!

For example, in Pan:
a) I love the "f" key to follow up on a message
b) And, I use the "n" key to read the next unread message

Yet, in Thunderbird:
a) Pressing "f" (which I inadvertently do all the time) does *not* followup 
   (it reads the next message)
b) Yet, pressing "n" reads the next unread message (just as in Pan).

I just wish there was some consistency, e.g., 

A) In both Pan and Thunderbird, press "f" to follow up on a message
