In case it matters, I'm using $PAN_HOME, but ~/.pan2 is a symlink to this pan instance anyway, so unless it's hard-coded and the hard-code can't follow symlinks, it should work via either $PAN_HOME or ~/.pan2 since the latter is a symlink to the directory in the former (~/pan/text/). Plus, as I said above, the other new backgrounds switched when I set them.
