I use one server. I tried what you said, and it downloaded all the
headers for each group. Then, when I clicked on the first group to try
to read it, they were all marked read, getting me even more out of sync
with what I've actually read than before.

Yes, but will future posts show up correctly as unread?  I'm guessing they
will.  I don't know of any way to restore the old state once the file gets
corrupted because information (in the technical sense of the word) is lost
in the accident.
