I have a somewhat similar problem, but only when I'm running the GNOME desktop. If you can try running either XFCE or KDE, or anything else that's not GNOME, see if that makes the problem go away (as it does for me). If that doesn't help, it is probably not the same thing. You said "locking up resources". In my case, top shows pan using a high percentage of the CPU and sometimes a lot of memory, and in bad cases, it has gone on for hours. I'm running Ubuntu 8.10, by the way. -- David
