Well, if you are doing it this way, you never use SSL.
To use ssl with pan, you have to use stunnel.
Set it up properly and then you can connect to your ssl server
for ex. via localhost and port 9000 or whatever you choose.

My usenet server, astrawebnews.com also has ssl enabled on their
servers.
In Pan I enter the address of the server and port if needed and then my
user name and password and Pan connects to the server and I can view
news with ssl enabled.
Never connects? Is there an error message of some sort?
