I'm pretty sure one can set that permanently by putting something in one's .Xresources file. The manual suggests a "faceName" resource. (The X resources are a perfectly good way to specify detailed preferences, yet GNOME and KDE don't seem to use it, afaik) Aside, for whoever is unaware of it, this -fa option is using a different font system than the earlier mentioned -fn option. The -fa option concerns client-side, TrueType fonts, and the -fn option concerns traditional, X-server-side fonts.
