$ldd /usr/bin/pan
        [...]
        libxml2.so.2 => /usr/lib64/libxml2.so.2 (0x00002b0195e44000)
        [...]
$

It's therefore not unreasonable to assume pan's ability to deal with 
borked xml is likely at least partially due to libxml2's abilities. =8^)
