I think I probably have found the problem - I *should* know more
tomorrow, but it seems that the hard drive in my laptop developed a
physical problem.  Suppoed to have a replacement tomorrow (I believe),
so once that's done, I'll rebuild again and see if that fixes it.

The disk was so messed up that even the SMART logging feature on the
drive said the drive's logs were corrupt.  That can't be a good sign.
