Add my vote.  I found the current behavior frustrating/maddening as well,
but figured I was in the minority.  Nice to find if it's a minority, it's
a substantially larger one than I had expected, and those holding the
other position don't seem very active either, as there hasn't been a
dissent yet. =8^)
