Well, that turned out to be simple:  pan doesn't play nicely with
gcc 3.3.6.  I was using 3.3.6 on my main machine because I like to
build mozilla-thunderbird from CVS every morning (as an alpha-tester)
and thunderbird didn't like gcc 3.4.x for awhile.

But all is well now -- both pan and thunderbird like gcc 3.4.5 :o)
