OK, I see the behavior on KDE/kwin now as well -- tabbed layout only.

In fact, it's rather strange.  Once "maximized" to beyond screen size,
hitting the maximize button again, I here the maximize sound event, but
nothing happens.  kwin recognizes it's not maximized and tells it to
maximize, sending the sound event, but the app stays at it's over-sized
size, refusing to remaximize to normal maximized size.  Hit it again, same
thing.

So yeah, interesting PAN problem.
