Think of OpenStack as allowing API driven deployment and management of SOA. You can break your application into smaller components, with clean zones of responsibility and communication between them, and then manage your application on top of OpenStack using its APIs to start new instances of components of your application. If you are asking how you can transfer your Java developer skills to improving the OpenStack platform, that is a trickier proposition: OpenStack is written in Python. Regards, Dave.
