Hi everyone, I currently cruise in the South Pacific on SY Thor and I use the Garmin Openseamap charts you guys provide so generously. Of course I don't use them as my sole navigational charts, but since the coastline of OSM data is ofteh better than what the mapping professionals can come up with, it is a valuable piece to the puzzle called navigation.
I am an Openstreetmap contributor since 2008 and because I started sailing a couple of years back I mapped for OSeaM as well. Here are some things I found about the OSeaM Garmin maps: As I said, the coastline is pretty accurate. Depth data is missing. I know you are working on it, but could you at least add the GEBCO contours to your Garmin charts? I know that the GEBCO stuff isn't very good above 200 m, but here in the South Pacific a lot of the waters in between the islands is over 1000 meters deep, so we would gain a lot of usefull information by including the GEBCO data. Inside the lagoons one has to rely on eyeball navigation most of the time anyways. The Pacific Ocean is the biggest Ocean in the World, and most of it is not available as a download in OSeaM. I think most is true for the other big oceans too. We are heading for Micronesia soon, and there is no Garmin map as of now. IMHO the files are too big. Do we really need all the residential roads of every landlocked country or every ice cream parlour in our OSeaM Garmin maps? The way the roads are rendered in my device (Etrex Legend Hcx)- all the names are abbreviated- the data is more or less useless anyways. If I want a hiking- or roadmap, I will download it separately anyways. Please focus on a nautical chart, not an all-in-one solution that does nothing really well. Can't the unnecessary land data be stripped from the OSM file before the file is processed? IMHO it would also reduce the size of the downloads considerably. Please don't take my critisism the wrong way, it is meant truly with the best intentions- towards the advancement of OSeaM. I as a mapper, user and advocate of OSeaM see myself as part of the project. You guys do a fantastic job of providing all these amazing tools.
