why? to be clear I’m experimenting on a smaller ephemeral test instance with 
non prod data, so there’s no risk to trying things.

With a database your size, you most definitely want 64-bit index hashes
everywhere.  It's scheduled to become the default start in OpenLDAP 2.7.
