Actually when you'd update you'd use "rpm -vF ..." I guess ;-)
But I'm unsure whether that will work "cross-vendor"; maybe check the file 
lists (rpm -qvlp ...) and compare with existng paths, also.
The best would probably be to have a snapshot-type backup (like for a VM 
shutting down, making a volume snapshot, then boot and trxy the update)
